Water Production and Treatment Plant Operator

Job Summary:
Operates and maintains the City's water production, treatment and storage facilities.

Knowledge of:
Operation and maintenance of complex mechanical and electrical equipment; principles of preventive maintenance plans; relevant tools and equipment; safety standards and safe work practices; proper safety equipment and procedures for handling chemicals and hazardous materials; applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations; effective customer service techniques.

Ability to:
Operate and maintain complex mechanical and electrical equipment; follow written and oral instructions; read and understand blueprints and electrical schematics; read, comprehend and follow instructions for the safe operation and repair of complex mechanical and electrical equipment; read and understand the importance of following the material safety data sheet (MSDS) in the event of exposure to hazardous chemicals; perform work requiring physical dexterity; lift, carry, and move heavy objects, tools and equipment; perform mathematical calculations to determine water inventory changes, production rates, flow velocity, differential pressure, level conversions, instrumentation conversions and well efficiency and drawdown; establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with various individuals, including contractors, City employees and the general public; provide effective customer service.

Skill in:
Reading, writing and communicating at an appropriate level; using a personal computer and various software applications.

Education, Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Two years of recent, paid experience in the operation and maintenance of a potable water treatment plant and/or similar water facility. Experience working with reverse osmosis water systems is desirable.

Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class C driver license. Must obtain a Hazmat endorsement issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles within one year from date of hire.
Possession of a valid Grade T2 Water Treatment Operator Certificate and a valid Grade D2 Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health.
Must obtain a letter from the California Department of Public Health confirming successful completion of the exams for both Grade T3 Water Treatment Operator and Grade D3 Water Distribution Operator within one year from date of hire. Must obtain and subsequently maintain Grade T3 Water Treatment Operator and Grade D3 Water Distribution Operator Certificates pursuant to the California Department of Public Health's experience portion of the certification requirements.
