Position Summary:
The City of Prescott Department of Public Works is seeking an experienced, knowledgeable and collaborative professional for the City's Water Division, in the position of Water Operator. Under general supervision of the Water Operations Supervisor, the ideal candidate will join a team of professionals performing operation and maintenance on all areas of the Water system; including water production wells, pressure reducing stations, water storage tanks, booster station facilities, the distribution system and more.
Essential Duties:
Daily tasks include: Operation and maintenance of a complex multiple pressure zone water system; monitor and maintain booster pump stations; monitor and maintain proper water levels in tanks; perform routine maintenance at a variety of facilities and on various equipment including wells, pump station sites and pressure reducing stations; maintain and repair a variety of pumps, motors, gauges, meters, and chemical feeders in the delivery system to meet system requirements while following all applicable State, Federal, and City of Prescott guidelines; monitor, evaluate and respond to SCADA system conditions and alarms; performs basic security to prevent unauthorized persons from entering water facilities; performs basic chemical and biological water sampling and testing; records and logs meter readings, levels, and pump performance information; interprets meter/gauge readings and makes appropriate adjustments if necessary; takes necessary steps to assess and report emergency situations and restore normal operating conditions; maintains equipment and facilities in a clean and orderly condition; follows city procurement code for the purchase of materials and supplies; performs customer service calls as assigned; must be available to participate in rotating coverage, work overtime and participate in stand-by coverage to accommodate a 7-day work schedule and emergency situations; perform other duties as necessary; must follow OSHA and City safety standards on the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and all related safety programs. May be requested to perform other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Must possess a High school diploma or equivalent; have progressive experience in the operations of water production and distribution systems, including a minimum of three (3) years full-time equivalent experience. Must possess Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Grade II Water Treatment and Grade II Water Distribution certifications or have the ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of being placed in the position; must possess a valid Arizona Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement or be able to obtain within 6 months of start date.

Skill and Ability to: Demonstrate a positive attitude; demonstrate a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment; provide excellent customer service through positive and professional communication; resolve customer inquiries, requests and complaints utilizing appropriate public relations techniques; build and maintain effective working relationships with co-employees and supervisors; communicate effectively and efficiently; understanding and following written and verbal directions; follow policies and procedures to ensure tasks are completed safely; exercise sound judgment and effective problem solving; maintain tools and equipment of trade; be able to work independently; maintaining focus while monitoring the system and performing maintenance tasks; operating water system equipment and machinery in a competent and safe manner; perform a variety of construction, plumbing, general maintenance and mechanical related activities related to pump building maintenance; use proper methods and techniques used in cleaning, repairing, and maintaining water system related equipment; maintain accurate records and files; collect and organize facts and data both orally, in writing and digitally; prioritizing and completing multiple concurrent projects; work overtime as needed, including nights, holidays, and weekends; work in extreme weather conditions; must be able to participate in on-call duties in a rotational manner which include being available 24/7 for a seven-day period, approximately twelve times annually; perform emergency standby duties on an as-needed basis; work in confined spaces; work in high traffic areas.
Physical Demands And Working Conditions:
Physical and Visual Ability: Sufficient to effectively perform required duties and to safely operate required equipment and city vehicles as needed; must be able to see clearly, with correction if necessary, during both day and night, and in potentially adverse weather conditions; ability to safely climb ladders in excess of thirty feet; must possess ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time and capable of lifting 60 pounds frequently with a maximum of 100 pounds.
Hearing and Speaking Ability: Sufficient to clearly, concisely and effectively communicate in person and over the radio and telephone.
